One more try

Nope, this isn't an extremely belated review of that MMFF movie last December.

I haven't been very active on my social sites for a couple of months now. What can I say? Life keeps happening and my activities online had to take a backseat. But lately, I've been missing it a lot. I miss making kulitan with my Plurk/Twitter/blog friends. And I miss having an outlet for what's going on inside my head (read: rant, hehe).

So here I am trying to take another stab at blogging more frequently. ;)

An iPad app for blogging

I admit it: owning an iPad has been a major contributing factor to my blogging so much lesser than I used to. It has made me too lazy to turn on my laptop and using the iPad for typing out a blog post is quite bothersome.

However, with my renewed conviction to blog a lot more regularly again, I knew I had to learn how to adjust to using my iPad for churning out my posts. I'm still considering if I should get a keyboard but, in the meantime, I needed an app to help make things easier for me. After a bit of research, I downloaded the Blogsy app and here I am trying it out. The reviews for the app are pretty good so I'm hoping that this will be the solution to my blogging funk/laziness.

Will let you know how it goes. :)

So good to be back!

It's summer and school's finally over for now. I haven't posted anything for some time but I'm going to try and get my groove back on again with my blog. There's so much to tell but I don't know where to begin. I need to organize my thoughts a bit first then I'll write a more substantial update.

Be back in a few!

flashback on Twitter

I've always found Plurk to be more fun than Twitter. People there behave much more irreverently and are less reserved about what they say which translates to more LOLs and, sometimes, a little controversy. For me, Twitter is the sanitized older cousin but being able to "socialize" and interact with celebrities, et al makes up for what it might lack in excitement.

Yesterday was a different story though when people began to tweet about their memories from their grade school/high school years. It was so much fun to take that road down memory lane. Tagged as #sentisabado, the Filipino Twitter population reminisced about everything from old commercials such as Lilet's Coca Cola TV ad, to fashion (teased hair, Pop Swatch watches & shoulder pads) and to places like old malls and discotheques people used to frequent. There were so many updates that the topic even trended fourth worldwide by early evening Philippine time.

Here's a screenshot of some of my #sentisabado tweets:

I'm not sure if #sentisabado will be as crazy popular next Saturday as it was yesterday but I know I had a great time laughing and remembering the old days. Life seemed so much simpler then and I guess some things always look better in retrospect. :d

How about you? Care to share some of your memories? :)

back in circulation

Hey there, blog. Sorry I've been remiss in updating you lately. I haven't been in the mood to do much online except to lurk. I was busy with other stuff and then a friend sent me some e-books which ended up consuming the rest of my free time. Percy Jackson and the Olympians were way too much fun to "put down" until I was through with all of them.

Now that I'm done though, I'll be coming back with a vengeance. Just you wait.

my smiley face

I'm sure my having a new theme no longer comes as a surprise to friends who visit my blog from time to time. I get bored after using a certain template for some time so I keep changing it up.

This time, I wasn't sick yet of my previous template. I actually loved it very much and still plan on using it again eventually. The only reason I gave it up was because I couldn't get the JavaScript for a set of emoticons to work on it. And I wanted my smilies! :D

I tried testing them on different templates and they worked except with the one I was using, hmpf. Since I wanted them badly, I decided to trade in my pretty pink/crimson theme with this white and red one  instead. It's bit more austere but the elements I want are available so I'm happy. :e

it's my Plurk-versary!

I got a little sidetracked yesterday because of my mini-breakdown. I'd been planning to blog about my Plurk anniversary but my drama got in the way.

I've been on Plurk for  two years now. I never really expected to enjoy it as much as I have or to last as long as I have or that I'd actually be able to meet new people through it. Before Plurk, I used to feel quite iffy about going online and chatting, or anything resembling it, with people I'd never met. I barely even YMed with my friends as it was. But, one incredibly boring day, I came across the widget on a blog friend's site and I decided to try it out. I didn't know any of the people I added although I did check their profiles and browsed through what they posted to get an idea of who they were. And I was really lucky because I became Plurk pals with people who were funny, smart, witty and crazy who could make me laugh like silly.

What's even nicer is that I've had the chance to meet a few of these wonderful people with whom I share my frustrations, inane thoughts and comments, rants, raves and what-have-yous every day. And I'm already looking forward to having dinner with them again and hopefully get to meet a few more.

I don't know how long any of us will continue to hang around in Plurk but it's been a great run so far and I'm just happy to have had the chance of knowing them online and in real life.

intarwebs break

Our internet connection went AWOL on us last Wednesday night and since it chose to disappear on a weekend, we had to wait until today to get it back. Thankfully, my mobile network's 3G came to my rescue. I was able to monitor my Twitter, Facebook and Plurk accounts every now and then although I didn't linger. I even streamed the England vs. Algeria match yesterday evening but it turned out to be a waste of money after the game ended in a scoreless draw. I should've watched the USA vs Slovenia match instead because even though it also ended in a 2-2 draw, it was at least way more exciting.

I ended up playing a lot with Jeolo during my internet hiatus and strained my back in the process because he weighs a ton now and then watched The Princess and The Frog a couple of times over with him. He insisted that J and I were the two frogs (but he called me a princess after my transformation) and that he was the trumpet-playing crocodile Louis. I also managed to finish reading two books, played Text Twist and Angry Birds on my phone like mad and napped during the afternoons.

And because I was bored silly, I dragged my men to Pizza Hut again last night. I kind of regretted it afterwards but my tummy was pretty happy.

All's well that ends well and I'm back to wasting my extra time online. It's good to be back.

thinking of moving house

I've been having problems the past two weeks with Google websites and it's really starting to irritate  me. I've been unable to access my Gmail and Blogger accounts as well as Google search.

Earlier today, I was in the mood to churn out a couple of blog posts but each time I tried to log in to my blog, I kept getting an error message. I don't know if it's merely a regional glitch. However, it has made me consider moving my blog to Wordpress instead. I know I won't have as much control over my blog's appearance using that platform compared to Blogger since I plan to just use the free basic account but, at least, it's more stable.

Anyway, I'll let you know what happens.

something new

If, like me, you're forever searching for the perfect template for your blog, this may be the answer to your quest: the Blogger Template Designer.

All you have to do, unless you've already made Blogger in Draft your default, is go to your Dashboard and look for the tab that says Blogger in Draft and click. It would be better if you created a new blog to make your new template with so, in case you mess up, your existing blog will be safe. Or download and backup your current theme.

Go to Layout and there you'll find the sub-tab Template Designer and you can immediately start playing with the many choices Blogger has provided.

Here's a sample from my test blog. I haven't tweaked the HTML or anything yet.

Looks really promising, doesn't it? Why don't you try it out. :)

"mother and child"

I've long wanted to learn how to edit photos and make them look more artsy-fartsy although I'm not a big fan of pictures that have been photoshop-ped to within an inch of their lives that they hardly resemble the original anymore but I digress.

As of now, I don't have Photoshop installed on my laptop yet but I found a great open source software that allows me to fix or enhance photos similar to the way it does. It's called the GNU Manipulation Program or GIMP. I've only been testing it out for a week and have been watching tutorials posted on YouTube to learn how to use it and I've been having lots of fun.

Here's something that I edited to look like a pen-and-ink illustration and posted it on Facebook as my profile photo and some of my friends really liked it:

That's my son and I. What do you think? :)

thematitis

Yes, I have a serious case of thematitis. I'm just not able to stick to one blog theme for too long. One moment I'm attracted to dark, muted colors then the next I want to go light and colorful. Darn mood swings.

Actually, I really liked my previous theme. It was a light olive green and looked clean and organized. Thing was I couldn't get any post summary script to work with it and I really wanted that option on my blog. When I checked my favorite source for new new theme releases, Blogger Templates, this white and orange template jumped out at me. So I downloaded it and did a trial run on my test blog and found that the script worked, yippee!

It looks pretty summer-y, don't you think? I wonder how long I'm going to stick to this before my thematitis acts up again though. Hmmm...

me time

It's the witching hour and I'm still up. This is my quiet time as my better-half catches up on his sleep after being on the night shift (1 to 9 am) for 5 days and our tot recharges for another day of torturing Meemee tomorrow. I love staring at our son as he sleeps because he looks so innocent and angelic as opposed to the tireless imp that he is  during the day.

While I'm testing the Safari for Windows browser I just finished downloading for my laptop, I'm also finishing up a 16 oz. mug of Milo which I prepared  with 4 heaping tablespoons of Milo, a tablespoon of powdered milk and half a teaspoon of sugar. It's a bit thick but that's the way I like it. And, by the way, I think I'm liking Safari much better than Firefox or Google Chrome although I can't say that with finality. Yet. Let's see how it holds up in the next few days.

Of course, what's quiet time without music? I have my earphones plugged in my ears while playing an iTunes playlist. And guess what I'm listening to? Christmas songs. Yes, I know it seems a bit early for that but it has never really mattered to me. Christmas music always makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside so I play it whenever I'm in dire need of a mood pick-me-upper or if I merely want to feel good.

Ok, will now concentrate on what I'm doing.

May I have your order, please?

One of my favorite games on Facebook is Restaurant City from Playfish. I used to start playing within an hour of waking up in the morning and just letting it run the entire day, checking every once in a while to feed my employees. I also made it a point to level up 3 dishes as fast as I could, one each for my Starter, Main Dish and Dessert, so that I could earn gourmet points faster. It didn't take long for me to reach Level 27, the final tier, of the game. After that, I didn't make much of an effort anymore to log on since the thrill was gone. Later, they added Drinks to the list and also allowed us to choose three items per meal to feature in our menu but it still didn't manage to make me return to playing the game like I used to.

Then two days ago, I decided to check in just to clear my restaurant of trash and I was greeted by new updates on the game. Since I'd been occasionally accumulating gourmet points even after reaching Level 27, I was automatically levelled up to 30 as the game now had additional levels (up to 32). And I had a garden!

The garden consists of 9 plots and a plot is unlocked beginning at level 16 and so on on every other level achieved. I have 8 right now and will have a complete garden by 32. A seed costs 2000 but unfortunately, I can't choose what seed I want so I'll have to wait and see what I'll be harvesting. Friends also can't water them for me so I'll have to do it myself. I can water my plots up to 3 times at once and it will last 9 hours before they get all dried up. Luckily, the plants won't die when that happens but will just stop growing until I get the chance to water them again. Ideally, they should be ready to harvest within 48 hours and whatever I harvest can be used as ingredients for my dishes or for trading with other RC friends.

Aside from having more levels and the new garden, the developers have also added some new ingredients (Vanilla, Wasabi, Coriander and Ginger) as well as new dishes (Three-Cup Chicken, Bak Kut Teh, Vanilla Panna Cotta, Ginger Beer Float and Vanilla Hot Chocolate) for RC people to add to their menus.

Now the game has given me something to play for again plus I'm not about to relinquish my top spot among my RC friends, hehe. I also need to save up some cash for the renovation I plan to do. Okay, have to go and slave drive my workers!

What's in a name?

People are usually surprised when they find out what my real name is because my nickname is in no way similar to it. They figure my parents chose it because I was a sweet kid or something, hehe.

Truth is, my parents couldn't agree on what name to give me. My dad wanted to name me after a famous female scuba diver from that time and my mom wanted to christen me after one of her favorite actresses, Candice Bergen. Obviously, my Papu won but Meemom didn't completely surrender. She nicknamed me "Candy" and it has stuck to this day.

Grace tagged me for this meme. You have to list five kind things you do for yourself, five kind things you do for your closest friend, partner or child and five kind things you have done for a stranger. You then have to tag five people but I'm leaving it open for anyone who wants to play.

Five kind things I do for myself:
1. Always keeping a positive outlook on life… it makes me a happier person.
2. Enjoying food but not overindulging… except for those few PMSy moments. :)
3. Counting my blessings every day.
4. Having simple joys in life.
5. Not picking up a smoking habit.

Five kind things I do for my best friend:
1. Be there for her whenever she needs me.
2. Comfort her when she’s sad.
3. Keep her company when she’s alone.
4. Make her laugh.
5. Never judging her for her actions or decisions.

Five kind things I have done for a stranger:
1. Given up my seat for someone who needed it more while on the train or the bus.
2. Buying a patient’s follow up IV fluid because they didn’t have money on hand to get one bottle.
3. Helping a mother carrying several bags plus a baby get on a jeepney.
4. Giving someone loose change to buy a train ticket.
5. Taking time out to give someone, who’s lost, directions.
