keeping tabs

I've been trying to be extra conscious about what I eat since I found out I was pregnant. Using my hormone-induced cravings and hefty appetite as an excuse to overindulge is a no-no. But with so many things going through my mind these days, I can't seem to keep track of how much and what I've eaten. And I hate feeling guilty each time I pop a Hershey's Kiss in my mouth or munch on a handful of chips, thinking I've had way too much of the "bad" stuff already.

The solution I came up with? Keeping a food diary. I found a simple app on iTunes that I could use to help track my daily food intake and downloaded it to my phone. Now, every time I eat or drink something, I immediately note it down. At the end of the day, I look at my list and I can tell if I've been eating right. It's also helped lessen my paranoia and guilt... what a relief!

Now, if I can only keep my diet controlled and healthy until the baby comes out. :angel

preggy and healthy

One of the things that's getting me down on this pregnancy is that I'm 10 lbs heavier starting out than with my first. I forgot all about portion control and eating healthy while we were on our vacation and indulged heavily on rice and pork-based dishes. I told myself that I'd whoop my ass back into shape once we got back but since I found out that I'm expecting, intensive workouts are no longer an option. Instead, I'm going to concentrate on eating right and not gaining any more excess pounds aside from what a pregnant woman should normally gain. I don't want to end up looking like a beached whale by the time I reach term.

I know it's going to be a bit of a challenge but I was able to successfully do this during my first pregnancy so I'm confident I'll be able to pull it off again. I already enlisted the husbo's aid to help me stay away from sugary and from salty food. We also went grocery-shopping last night for fruits, skimmed milk and skimmed yogurt so I could prepare my favorite pregnancy snack: fruit smoothies. And I'm going to allot 20-30 minutes everyday to walking on the treadmill to stay fit and to keep the edema away. I still need to plan my daily menu though and will try to accomplish that today.

Here's to a healthy eight months ahead for this preggo lady... Cheers!

a test of willpower

I had absolutely no plans of exercising today because I was pissed.

This morning, the weighing scale showed that I'd gained back the kilogram I'd already lost and I couldn't understand why. I've been pushing my lazy ass to run every day and my food intake has considerably lessened and has become healthier so why the darned gain? In my frustration, I ate rice for lunch then I decided I wasn't going to sweat it out on the treadmill. Yes, I can be very mature sometimes.

Three o'clock struck and I found myself reluctantly getting up and heading towards my instrument of torture. I told myself I'd only brisk walk for 30 minutes but when I was finally on the treadmill, I couldn't help but follow the program I've been using. And while I was wheezing through a sprint, I had a eureka moment: I was PMS-ing. Hmpf. I always gain a lot of water weight during this dreaded time of the month but lose it immediately after I get my period.

My dour mood improved immensely after that and gave me a renewed vigor to burn my fat out. I was so happy that I didn't skip on my exercise even though I wanted to. Then this song came on my iPod:

I'm feeling quite proud of myself today. :D

How to save a life...

...or, at least, try to.

Last Sunday, I attended a Basic Life Support class. It's been four years since I last got certified but I'm happy to report that it was still pretty much second nature to me. Knowing how to give prompt medical aid to people before they reach the hospital, or in situations where advanced medical care isn't immediately available, is a must for all healthcare providers. While it may not always manage to save a life, it does increase a victim's chance of survival.

But I don't think knowledge of basic life support should be limited to just healthcare individuals. Everyone should learn it if they have the opportunity. You don't need any special medical know-how to be able to learn and  perform it well. Although I hope that no one will ever actually have to use it, being armed with this skill could help save the life of someone you know - a colleague, a friend, or even a family member.

You can view basic life support videos online such as on Learn CPR, a free public service website supported by the University of Washington School of Medicine. They have guides and demos for Adult, Child and Infant CPR as well as first aid for choking victims. I hope you'll take the time to watch some of them just so you can have an idea on how to do them. And if you have the chance to take a class and get certified, that would be even better.

running in tune

In keeping with my weight loss plan, I've started running regularly again. I kind of fell off the wagon for a while but I got my motivation back so it's back to huffing and puffing on the treadmill five times a week for 25-45 minutes depending on what day it is.

And because I need aural stimulation to help me get through an entire run, I turn to music to keep me going. I'm thankful that with so many people in to running  these days, I found a lot of playlist suggestions online. Right now, I'm alternating between this Couch to 5K running program podcast by Robert Ullrey and a Glee-inspired playlist I made. For this coming week, I'll be doing Week 3 (heaven help me!) of the Couch to 5K program on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday then intersperse it with a longer but more relaxed pace with the Glee music on .

You can download the Couch to 5K podcasts HERE if you're interested. And here's my Glee-ful Run playlist:

  1. Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival
  2. Shake Your Booty by KC and the Sunshine Band
  3. Bust A Move by Young MC
  4. Don't Stop Believing by Glee Cast
  5. Jump by Van Halen
  6. U Can't Touch This by MC Hammer
  7. Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyonce
  8. My Life Would Suck Without You by Glee Cast
  9. Bad Romance by Glee Cast
  10. Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) by Parliament
  11. Safety Dance by Men at Work
  12. Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Glee Cast

I prefer the original recording for most of the songs and used it instead of the Glee versions.

It's time to bring my sexy back!

scrubbed

I've always been jealous of other women who have smooth skin and invisible pores. I was unfortunate enough to inherit my dad's oily skin and my mom's large pores that's why I need to be meticulous about my skin care. By meticulous, I only mean that I make sure I keep my skin clean.

My beauty regimen, if you can call it that, is quite basic: wash, exfoliate, tone and moisturize. And since I refuse to pay for expensive facials here in Riyadh, I improvise instead. It helps keep my skin from breaking out except for the occasional pimple or two. But I'm still relentlessly plagued by whiteheads and blackheads despite the scrubbing that's supposed to keep them at bay.

Then, about a week ago, while trying to find out how to use baking soda to clean out our microwave, I "discovered" that people also use it as an exfoliant. Baking soda = exfoliant = really?!

After doing some research and reading mostly rave reviews, I decided to put it to the test. I mixed 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. The consistency was just right for me. After washing my face, I slathered some of the mixture on and proceeded to firmly but gently scrub in circular motions like I would with my regular apricot scrub. I immediately felt the difference after I rinsed because my skin felt so much smoother and softer than it usually did. And when I looked closely to check on those pesky whiteheads and blackheads on my nose and chin, I was so happy to see that they had cleared up a lot!

I've been using it every other day for a week now and I love it. I even recommended it to J but he got a little too enthusiastic and scrubbed too vigorously thus he ended up with red, irritated skin. And it did make my skin feel a mite dry when I didn't moisturize immediately after although it also may have something to do with the climate here. But I'm so happy with it that I'll be ditching the apricot scrub I've been using since college for baking soda. What's even better is that it's quite cheap and a box will last me a very long time. Less chemical stuff on my face, too. :D

We're down with the cold and flu. :~ J caught the virus about a week ago and inevitably passed it on to me. It's such a bothersome illness really especially for me because my sinusitis also acts up along with it. But I'm taking in a lot of fluids, gobbling vitamin C-rich fruits and popping a med to help relieve some of the symptoms. Hopefully, it'll be gone in a day or two and that Jeolo will be able to escape unscathed. It's so much harder when he gets sick.

demotivating

I guess most of you know how I feel about smoking. It's a vile habit that becomes even worse when it intrudes upon someone else's personal space.

Anyway, I came across Xiaxue's blog and she made some non-politically correct posters about smoking and smokers and I couldn't help but laugh and agree.

Here are three of the 10 posters she made:

To add to the above two:

Why bother to spritz yourself with expensive perfume when cigarette smoke tenaciously clings to your hair, your skin and your clothes thus making you smell like a walking, talking ashtray?

Why bother trying to delude yourself with the thought that you're leading a healthy lifestyle by going to the gym and by trying to eat the right food when you can't even refrain from lighting up?

Maybe you tell yourself that you'll have the best motivation to quit once you're pregnant because you'd never willingly endanger your unborn child by smoking but why wait till then? Don't you know that it becomes harder for a woman to conceive if she smokes?

You can see the rest of them HERE. And if you're someone who hasn't done yourself the kindness of kicking  your smoking habit, I hope this helps.

skin deep

There may be a lot of things that are cheaper here in Riyadh compared to the Philippines such as gold jewelry, tech gadgets and perfumes but salon services are one of the exceptions. A simple hair cut costs around PhP 500-600 so you can imagine how much everything else is priced. Hence, I only ever get salon- or spa-pampered when we're on vacation. I know J wouldn't mind if I wanted to avail of a facial or a manicure - pedicure but I feel loathe to spend so much money on things like that.

Instead, I clean and paint my own nails as well as give myself an at-home facial. And, on those days when I'm too lazy to go through the entire rigmarole, I tear open a sachet of my favorite Montagne Jeunesse skin treat, apply it on my face, rinse or peel it off and voila! my skin feels like it had an instant facial.

I absolutely love their products which are processed minimally and use only natural ingredients from plants and minerals. My personal favorites are Passion Peel OffGreen Tea masqueCream & Honey Skin Polisher and Cucumber Purifying Peel Off masque. You might have noticed that I love masques a lot. I usually apply them right after a bath and by the time I've finished dressing, it's already dry and ready to be removed. My son always cries when he catches me peeling it off because he finds it scary, hehe!

I'm glad that even if I have to forgo some of my favorite indulgences, I've found alternatives good enough to satisfy me and keep me looking good until our next trip home.

19.4.10

getting ready

Okay, since we decided to finally try and have another baby, it's high time for me to start cleaning up my act. I haven't been eating very healthy the past year nor have I been exercising regularly and it's time to change that.

When I was pregnant with Jeolo, I was on a low-sodium, low-sugar, low-fat, high-fiber diet. I planned my meals properly, making sure I was taking in enough vegetables, the right amount of fish and meat, and snacked on fruits. When I was too lazy to actually eat fruits, I made them into smoothies and drank them instead.

And before we even found out that I was preggers, I made my husband promise to not give in whenever I craved for chips, soda or chocolate; not even if I'd get mad at him or threw a tantrum or cried. And he really did stick to his promise and I hated him for it sometimes. Grrr! I was very thankful for this later though because I barely experienced getting a swollen nose or swollen feet and fingers. Even up to the time I gave birth, my wedding ring still fit. Only my feet got a little bigger because after I went home on my 7th month, I kind of caved in to my cravings and J wasn't there to stop me.

Another good thing is that I'm not a coffee-drinker or a smoker because the stress of having to give them up on top of a diet and exercise overhaul would probably be quite stressful. And since neither smoking nor caffeine is very helpful in conceiving, those who are into them should start weaning themselves as early as possible.

If I was able to do all that then, I know I can do it again. The only thing I need to do more of is exercise. I wasn't able to do as much of it as I should have and that will definitely have to change. Add to that prayers, a happy and positive disposition plus a supportive husband then I'm all set. Bring it on, baby!

running back into shape

After we came back from our vacation last January, I didn't really make much of an effort to lose the weight I gained while we were back home. For the first few weeks, I was feeling a bit homesick so I wanted to keep eating and eating.

By the beginning of March, I felt that it was time to start getting back into shape. I vowed to play more badminton but it hasn't turned out as well as I wanted it to. The games are scheduled in the evenings from 7-11 pm so J can't come and fetch me afterwards because Jeolo's asleep by that time and he also has to prepare for his work shift which is at midnight. I've ended up playing only sporadically and that obviously isn't going to help me lose weight much.

I decided instead to go back to running on the treadmill and it's been going quite well. I've said before that treadmill running bores me because all I can see ahead of me is a wall. I didn't want that to deter me again so I made a special effort to come up with a great music playlist to keep me going.

Here's my current playlist which starts out with a warm up walk at 94 bpm, a peak run at 176 bpm then cools down to a leisurely walk at 88 bpm:

  1. Ballad for Kay by Acoustic Alchemy - 94 bpm
  2. Everlong by Foo Fighters - 158 bpm
  3. Take It Off by The Donnas - 159 bpm
  4. Runnin' Down A Dream by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - 170 bpm
  5. Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol - 176 bpm
  6. Do You Know Me by John Mayer - 159 bpm
  7. Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 - 88 bpm

I'll probably stick with this for another week before changing it up again and, hopefully, be able to add another half-a-mile to my distance. Please send me your positive vibes! :)

going green

I love tea but I've always preferred drinking black tea and fruit teas over green tea. I always found it a little too vegetal-tasting. Then last year, I discovered Lipton Clear Green tea in lemon. The lemon flavor masked the herbal taste enough to convince me to start drinking it. And after a while, I seem to have finally acquired a taste for it and now I've totally given up black tea.

I take about 3-4 cups of green tea per day and I'm hoping that, aside from the relaxing feeling it gives me, I'm also getting these health benefits:

  • helps fight cancer
  • helps prevent heart disease
  • helps burn fat (woohoo!)
  • helps stave off dementia

Now, ain't that something? :) So, come on and have a cup (or two!) with me.

one step forward, two steps back

This is so frustrating!

After almost two years of avoiding it, I finally had to admit to myself that I needed to drop my carb intake drastically if I really wanted to lose weight and keep it off. I was loathe to do it at first but about three weeks ago, I removed rice from my diet. I really thought I wouldn't be able to pull it off since I love my rice so much but I was very surprised when I did manage it without any major drama from myself. And guess what? I lost 4lbs in just 2 weeks. Yay for me! It made me feel so good and confident that I'd be able to finally lose the extra weight I'd gained in the past year and to keep it off.

Image borrowed from CartoonStock

Until PMS hit me this week. Like always, it has made me crave for food, food and even more food. I'm trying my hardest not to give in but I've slipped a bit the last few days. I indulged in tapsilog, pancit, champorado and pasta for 3 consecutive days, waaahhhhh! Although, in my defense, I only ate half of what I used to consume but know it's still going to set me back a bit. And the difficult part is if I don't satisfy my craving, I become very short-tempered and turn into a banshee. My poor husband and precious little boy have to tread carefully around me or else.

There's probably another week of having to deal with my hormonal short-circuit and I'm hoping fervently that I'll be able to get back on track or else I'm going to feel quite depressed once my PMS is over and the weight I lost comes back. Wish me luck!

keeping things simple

One of the things I don't like about living in Riyadh is that the climate here makes my skin very dry. I go through a 500ml bottle of lotion in just about two weeks. But my biggest and most irritating problem is my scalp. It's extremely dry and itchy. When I can't help myself and scratch it, I can see actual flakes fall. And no, I don't have dandruff. I also considered scalp eczema but since my condition resolves within 2 days upon returning to the Philippines, it doesn't seem likely.

I've tried changing my shampoo every few weeks, rinsing as thoroughly as possible each time and even applying oil but it remains as itchy as ever. I swear, if someone were to shave me bald this instant, my head would not be a pretty sight to behold. My hubby suggested applying a corticosteroid cream but it's a bit too drastic for me.

Then, last week, I decided to try and use my son's baby shampoo. It was bit runny compared to my regular shampoo since, I guess, little people only need a small dollop for their fine hair. I had to pour a palmful for mine so I could get it to lather up properly. I was worried that it wouldn't manage to wash away the oil but after I finished rinsing, my hair felt very clean. I just applied a bit of conditioner to the ends of my hair, rinsed again and I was done.

I've been using it for a week now and guess what? No more itchy scalp! All this time the remedy has been right within my reach and I never thought of it till now. I guess the shampoos I've been using have harsh chemicals that aggravate my dry scalp with all their promises of healthy, shiny hair while the baby shampoo does what shampoos are supposed to do: clean.

I  might have to buy a new bottle more frequently but with the intense relief I'm feeling these days, it's well worth it.

party peepers

I've finally been able to try out my Sephora Mini Heated Eyelash Curler, which I blogged about a few weeks ago, for a couple of times now and all I can say is that I'm very happy with it.

It's very safe and easy to use, I didn't have to worry about getting my eyelids burned. Unlike traditional eyelash curlers where we crimp first then apply our mascara, things are done the other way around with this contraption. First, I turned the heated curler on and let it warm up for a minute. While waiting, I brushed on my mascara (I used Maybelline's XXL Curl Power ) and by the time I was done, the curler was also ready. I used it the way I applied mascara - I started from as near the roots as I could then sort of made a curling move with it then pressed it lightly against my lid for a few seconds. It's probably a little hard to visualize but I'm sure you won't have any trouble if you get the chance to try it. I repeated it a few times until I got the curl I wanted. With that, my stubbornly straight lashes stayed curled for about four hours before I needed a retouch. I know you'd probably say, "Only four hours?!" but if you ever get the chance to meet my lashes, you'd understand why four hours is a long time for me. Then I found something else that helped me achieve maximum curling power and that was by using Shu Uemura's Mini Eyelash Curler.

Yes, our favorite Shu Uemura lash buddy now has a mini me and it's perfect for short, stubby lashes like mine. It did take me a bit of practice to get my lashes done right since I had to do them by sections. But once I got the hang of it, it was time well spent. It's precision curling at its best. You who've been blessed with fuller and longer lashes will be able to achieve an even more doe-eyed look as this baby allows you to curl the outer corner lashes beautifully.

So, for those moments when I need my lashes to stay prettier much longer, I use the mini curler first then mascara and finish off with the heated wonder. But for those ordinary days, I stick to either just the mascara and use either the Shu Uemura mini or the Sephora mini heated one. Whichever I choose, I'm finally satisfied that I can now have the wide-eyed effect that I've always wanted.

wide-eyed

I've never really been a big makeup user. I find that it takes too much time to bother putting all that warpaint on although I don't go out bare-faced either. My usual routine includes applying a layer of light foundation, cheek stain and a sheer lipstick. If I feel a bit more fussy, I pencil my brows a bit. But what I've always wanted to add to my ritual was curling my lashes and putting on mascara.

So what's been stopping me from doing that? My short, stubbornly straight Asian eyelashes. Whenever I use an eyelash curler, it doesn't manage to catch all those tiny strands because, aside from my lashes' length, traditional curlers are too contoured for my eye shape and whatever it manages to curl doesn't stay for longer than an hour even with those curling mascaras. It's always been a source of frustration for me so I pretty much gave up on it. Then recently, I came across a product online that gave me hope: self-heating, wand-type eyelash curlers. No need to blast a blow dryer on my traditional one and risk getting my lids burned. Now where to find one here in Riyadh?

This evening, my sister and I checked out the Sephora shop at the mall we went to and asked if they had it in stock. And they did! I was so happy and immediately got myself one. I'm really hoping that this works so that I can finally achieve that bigger, wider-eyed look I've always wanted for my peepers.

I'll let you know how it goes after I try it out tomorrow.

miracle in a tube?

I've always said that I'm not afraid of growing old. I don't want to be like some women who try to cling on absurdly to their youth. However, I do want to age gracefully and to not look older before my time so I try to dress appropriately, eat right as much possible, avoid smoking, drink occasionally and take care of my skin.

When I turned 32, I began to notice fine lines at the outer corners of my eyes and in between my brows whenever I smiled. This despite religiously using eye cream and a moisturizer. The little laugh lines didn't bother me but the slight furrows on my forehead did. So, I changed my moisturizer to one of those popular products that claimed to get rid of fine lines and make the skin smoother and such.

About a week after I began using it, I noticed that my skin did feel smoother and looked better. I thought, "Wow, this stuff actually works." But after about a month, it seemed to lose its effect and my skin went back to its usual condition. I decided not to bother buying it again and to just go back to my old faithful, Nivea.

Then recently, I remembered about this other product, Pond's Age Miracle line, which I'd read about on Abbie's blog last year. She had raved about it and managed to pique my interest but I'd been hesitant about trying it out because their facial wash had given me pimples before. My curiosity eventually won out though and I bought a tube of their Concentrated Resurfacing Serum.

When I first applied it, I felt a very slight stinging sensation but I didn't get any rashes or redness so I continued it. I liked that it felt very light on my skin, lessened its oily appearance, made my skin feel very smooth and powder application a breeze. I didn't think of checking the serum's effect on my fine lines until about two weeks ago, as I was plucking my eyebrows, when I noticed that the little brown spot on my right cheek had faded and the tiny furrows between my brows had disappeared. I was pleasantly surprised because I hadn't been expecting to see any obvious changes.

So, I've decided to stick to it for now. I know that there's no stopping my skin from getting wrinkles and all the other stuff that comes with aging but if something helps me look better and to feel better about myself then I'm going to use it. It's been a month now and so far it's been living up to the hype. We'll see how it fares on its second month.

it snuck up on me

I know I said that I'd finally stop whining about my so-called "weight issue". And I did... right after this post. But today I got a small pleasant surprise. I got on the scale this morning and I'm only 2 lbs shy of reaching my goal weight of 120 *BIG GRIN*. I really did stop thinking about trying to lose those last few stubborn pounds. I was actually expecting to gain a little because I've been eating a lot lately. Then two days ago, my sis-in-law's friend, who's from the same city as I am and had last seen me 3 months ago, was here and she told me that I'd lost weight. That's when I realized that I had to wear a belt every time I put on my jeans (the size 28 & 29 ones I bought after giving birth because I didn't fit into my old ones anymore). Plus I no longer look like a suman whenever I wore my medium-sized baby tees. It's all probably because of my son's hyperactiveness (is there such a word?!) these last few weeks. Total body workout.

Anyway, I'm happy. :o)

5.3.08

a weighty issue

Since I gave birth, I've been obsessing a bit about the extra weight I put on during my pregnancy. About getting it off me, to be exact. Putting things in perspective, I didn't really gain that much. I weighed 118 lbs before I got pregnant and weighed 136 lbs right after delivery which meant I had 18 lbs to lose. I shed about half of it within the first month since it was most probably just water weight and had 9 left to get rid of. So, I resorted to cutting down my food intake. It proved a little difficult because I found myself binging on all the junk that I steered clear of (most of the time, hehe!) while I was preggers. And then the holidays came *sigh*. I went back to eating less in January and began doing exercise. But I couldn't do it as regularly as I'd planned because my time revolved around my baby.

Right now, I'm at 125. The last 5 stubborn pounds are proving to be the hardest to lose. Pre-pregnancy I weighed between 115-120 so I figured 120 was thin enough for me. Until I realized yesterday how idiotic it is to be obsessing over this weight thing.

I mean, I'm pretty lucky. I dropped 13 lbs without having to bust my ass or to starve myself. All I did was skip the sweets and chips. A lot of other women spend several hours a week sweating it out at the gym or suffering through diets to lose a pound or two. My metabolism's still pretty good for a 32-year old. I know I'll eventually get to the weight that I want. Not as fast as I'm used to but what's the rush anyway? I don't have to prove that I can stay slim even after having a baby. I'm not out to get a bikini-worthy body... I already had that for 30 years. Not that I'm loving my post-baby belly but, all things considered, it's all good.

That ends my weight fixation.

Still hungover

It's my third post for today! :o) Well, the first two weren't particularly upbeat (I'm PMSing, ok?!) but this one is. I'm still floating on Cloud Nine because Je succeeded on giving up smoking. It's something that I've been praying for. As my friend NNG said, it is possible to live smoke-free. :o)

Sweetie, sweetie, sweetie... You have no idea how happy you've made me. Even if you don't send me roses for Valentine's, it's alright because this is more than enough.
